  1. To unpack this, I might say something about Feuerbach; left as an exercise for the reader.

    God could be seen as a symbol of conscience — the idea that it matters, what we do. It still matters, even if the individual has no conscience. Perhaps God has no more need of existence than the individual conscience does: it is enough that an action is unconscionable, and it remains so, in and of itself. God can still see.
